I recently graduated from the International Guide Academy, earning a Certification as an International Tour Manager by spending over 80 hours immersed in academy studies while staying in Ottawa, Canada. Their Tour Manager course was one of the most empowering things I’ve ever done for myself and a most entertaining way to find oneself learning about the fine city of Ottawa quite intimately! The city is simply beautiful, easy to cover on foot, literally 100′s of things to see and do, and everyone is out of doors, it seemed to me, biking, walking about! The nepean gothic stoneworks of Parliament Hill being the centerpin to all the rich monuments surrounding the downtown area, and the Rideau Canal, so rich in historical depth, a major attraction and artery from Ottawa to Kingston; I enjoyed both a spectacular music and lights show on “The Hill”, titled ’Musaika’, while downtown late one night, and again I trotted downtown mid-morning day 4, and lucked out in passing the Major of the Changing of the Guard while entering the lawn who grandly asked his compadre to take our picture together! Two of the most pleasurable afternoons were spent gazing at the falls along the Ottawa River, and later the next day plying the Rideau Canal on a golden sunset cruise, both on watercrafts provided by Paul’s Boat Lines – don’t miss the opp to do both! I walked daily through Centertown going to and from my classes and felt quite the local, stopping in to buy wines at the Wine Rack shop on Elgin St., purchasing to-go at Fettucine’s, a local noodlery, perusing 2nd-hand items in the St. John’s Church Community Shop and feasting twice at The Colonnade, on O’Connor, a fantastic pizza restaurant run by the most exquisite Lebonese lady named Mona. My now two close friends, Darlene and Louise, both local to Ottawa and my classmates at IGA, are thumbsworn to become future Gutsy Women without a doubt and we all three are just chompin’ at the bit to manage our first of many tours! Here’s a pic of “Pierre’s Fine Motor Coach” on which we cruised downtown Ottawa practicing our commentaries ~ Simply a Blast!! Interested in becoming either a Tour Manager or a Tour Guide?
